Trees,landscaping and underground sprinkler systems can ONLY be placed outside of the road right-of-way. Right-of-way width is normally 66 feet wide; 33 feet in each direction from the center of the roadway. Please contact the Road Commission to check the right-of-way width for your location. POLICY ON LANDSCAPING IN COUNTY ROAD RIGHT OF WAY

Whereas citizens from time to time plant or place within the public right-of-way trees, landscaping timbers or rocks, fences, landscape berms and other sundry objects, without the permission of the Road Commission, and; Whereas said objects can present dangers to the traveling public and present difficulties in the maintenance of the road and the installation and maintenance of public utilities; It is hereby declared to be the policy of the Berrien County Road Commission not to allow the planting of trees or the installation of landscaping timbers or rocks, fences, landscape berms, lawn irrigation systems, and all other objects other than mail boxes and mowable grasses, except by permit, which will only be granted in exceptional circumstances.
