TOWNSHIPS: Bainbridge, Baroda, Benton, Berrien, Buchanan, Chikaming, Lincoln, Pipestone, Royalton, Sodus, St Joseph, Weesaw
LOCATION: Various locations in Berrien County
CONSTRUCTION YEAR: 2022
PROJECT: The Berrien County Road Department (BCRD) has been notified that a guardrail safety project has been approved for federal funding in the 2022 fiscal year. This federal funding is made possible through the 2022 Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP). The approved project includes upgrading guardrail and installing new guardrail in locations where none currently exists.
SAFETY BENEFITS: Upgrading existing guardrail and guardrail ends along with the addition of new guardrail at high-risk areas will provide additional safety to the traveling public. Guardrail helps protect the traveling public from potential hazards such as entering into drainage ditches or other obstructions located in close proximity to the roadway.
FUNDING: This project will be made possible through the HSIP Local Safety Program that was applied for by the Berrien County Road Department in the Summer of 2020. Federal funding will cover 90% of the project cost, and the BCRD will pay the remaining balance.
The BCRD’s engineering department is constantly looking for additional grants and funding opportunities. The Road Department’s priority is to maintain and continue to improve the county network for the traveling public by utilizing all funding possible in the most efficient way.
